Attack on Sri Lanka ant-corruption activit’s residence draws EU condemnation

Sept 29, 2008 (LBO) - The European Union has condemned a grenade attack on the home of a Sri Lankan lawyer and human rights and anti-corruption activist and urged the government to bring the perpetrators to justice. The attack was the latest in a series of attacks and threats against civil society groups, human rights activists and journalists who highlight government corruption and human rights abuses.

"The EU notes with concern the trend in attacks and threats on journalists, civil society organizations and now a lawyer," it said in a statement.

It said the attack on Saturday night on the residence of J C Weliamuna, executive director of Transparency International Sri Lanka, an anti-corruption watchdog, may have been connected with his work.

An unexploded grenade was also found in Weliamuna's residence.


"Although there is no indication on the reasons or on the perpetrators of this attack, it is assumed that the attack may have been against the important human rights and anti corruption work Mr.Weliamuna was involved in," the EU said.
