A supporter of the breakaway commander who led an unprecedented split in the Tamil Tiger guerrillas in March was gunned down by a fellow inmate at a jail in eastern Sri Lanka Thursday, officials said.rn
The victim was identified by officials as Sathya Master, a key supporter of renegade leader Karuna. rn

The Tigers had previously accused Sri Lankas military intelligence of smuggling in mobile phones to allow Sathya Master to give interviews to the media denouncing the main Tiger group.rn

A military official said that the man who shot Sathya Master with a revolver smuggled into the prison had climbed onto the roof of the prison and was threatening to kill himself.rn

The prison killing came after an open confrontation in the same area between the main Tamil Tiger group and rebels loyal to the breakaway leader V Muralitharan, better known as Karuna.rn
