The EU donates satellite pictures of Sri Lanka’s coastline before and after the tsunami, to help reconstruction. “As an essential contribution to help post-tsunami reconstruction in Sri Lanka, the European Commission (EC) has delivered to the Sri Lankan authorities, very high-resolution satellite imagery of the entire affected coastline of Sri Lanka before and after the tsunami,” said a statement from the EC delegation in Sri Lanka on Thursday.
The EC will also provided technical assistance to the Urban Development Authority(UDA) for the transformation of this imagery into 1;5,000 baseline image maps.
The UDA wanted satellite pictures extending about 500m inland, of the tsunami damaged coastline, to identify the extent of damages and potential relocation lands.
The tsunami damaged and totally destroyed over 74,000 houses along Sri Lanka’s coast.
The high-resolution satellite pictures will be used for more precise damage assessments, reconstruction plans and risk analysis.
