Bunker Battle

Jan 07, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's army overran Tamil Tiger fortifications in north-western Mannar while also engaging them on two other fronts in clashes that killed 23 guerrillas and one soldier since Sunday, the military said. Media Center for National Security said fighting was reported on separate fronts in Mannar, north-central Vavuniya and the northern Jaffna peninsula.

In Parappakandal in Mannar, the army overran five Tiger bunkers and recovered weapons and other equipment.

During the last eight days, the military has reported capturing Tiger-held areas in Parappakandal and having advanced towards the village of Pallaikuli.

The military said the Tigers suffered heavy losses during this advance.

The Mannar army operation is part of the current military campaign to weaken the rebels and keep harassing them before an anticipated offensive into the Tiger stronghold of the north-central Wanni jungles.

A pro-Tiger website reported that two Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed and many wounded during an attack on an army defence line in Muhamalai around 8:00 a.m. Sunday.

But the Media Centre for National Security said they had no information of this attack.
