July 3, 2007 (LBO) – Dialog Telecom is offering free breaking news for its customers days after competitor Mobitel launched trials for a text news alert. "We are launching this service with a view to providing information and creating a sense of security for customers," Nushad Perera, head of sales at Dialog Telekom said in a statement.

"This is an amazing advantage since the news will come direct to our customers while they are on the move, so they need never worry about being uninformed or unaware of what is taking place around them."

Sri Lanka is caught in an intensified conflict in the north and the east of the island which frequently spills over to the rest of the country.

Dialog Telecom will use Reuters news for its alert service.

Last month Mobitel launched a breaking news alert service with Jasminenews.com, a pioneer dot com that provides news alerts through text messaging and the internet.

Dialog is Sri Lanka's largest celco with a 60 percent share of the six million subscriber maket.
