Security was stepped up and a curfew imposed in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna peninsula following the murder of a senior police officer and a sharp rise of tension in the area, the military said. The authorities imposed the curfew shortly after a mob beat and hacked to death police Superintendent Charles Wijewardena late Thursday while he was investigating the shooting to death of a barber, a military spokesman said on Friday.

“The curfew will be lifted at dawn on Saturday,” the spokesman said.

Security had also been beefed up in the tense region following the killings, he said.

Authorities said the barber was killed at Inuvil in Jaffna Thursday when a soldier’s automatic assault rifle fired accidentally. Residents took to the streets in protest afterwards, prompting police to call out anti-riot squads.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga appealed for calm and restraint and expressed sympathies over the deaths of the barber and the police officer.
