Trishaw owners have become a privileged lot, first fuel subsidies and tax cuts from the government and now individual attention from Peoples Bank. The bank says there are 200,000 registered three wheelers, with the potential of regular income, making them a viable market segment.

On Tuesday, Peoples Bank sent a call out to three wheeler owners to open a savings account with them.

Attached to a new savings account opened with a minimum Rs. 500.00 was an ATM card and eligibility to future loan schemes.

“In the past we have catered to various segments of society, such as farmers and teachers. Now we decided to focus on the three wheeler owners,” says Head of Personal and Development Banking ,” P V Pathiranam.

“There are over 200,000 three wheelers registered at the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, so this is a considerable market,” he added, explaining the bank’s sudden interest in the common mode of transport.
