President Chandrika Kumaratunga argues she should stay in power until late 2006, while her foes say the vote is due in 2005.
If an polls are called it will be the fifth election since Kumaratunga’s re-election in 1999 — general elections were held in 2000, 2001 and 2004. The country’s main political parties are hedging bets that another general election could also be in the offing soon.
