The telecom watchdog has been taken over by President Chandrika Kumaratunga as part of her lquote constitutional coup, effectively putting the whole industry in disarray.
President Kumaratunga last week tookover the posts of Defence, Interior and Media, but said she had left the telecommunications ministry with the government.rn

rnldblquote A subsequent check on the gazette notification of Nov. 3 shows that she has even taken over the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission,
dblquote Minister Ravi Karunanayake told journalist on Tuesday.rn

rnUnder the current laws, its the teleco watchdog and not the ministry, that keeps the sector ticking, doing key stuff like spectrum allocation and issuing licences.rn

rnFormer Media Minister, Imthiaz Bakeer Marker is now left with the Postal Ministry and Sri Lanka Telecom, Karunanayake said.rn

rnIronically, SLT belongs to the Treasury not the Telecom Ministry. Its Board of directors are appointed by the Finance Ministry.rn
