Dialog Telekom, a unit of Telekom Malaysia, said Tuesday it had concluded a deal to buy backbone operator MTT Networks for US$ 19.2 million. Presently the island’s largest private communication backbone operator, MTT has 20-year licence expiring in 2015, to offer leased line, switch and non-switch data communication services.

MTT’s portfolio also includes an external gateway licence and a CDMA (code division multiple access) or low cost fixed line licence.

Dialog plans to run MTT as separate entity, allowing it to cater to its existing clientele including other cellular operators and national television stations.

Sri Lanka’s largest market capitalized stock, Dialog is also the island’s biggest cellular operator commanding over two million subscribers.
