Snail mail users will have to lick a Rs. 5 stamp with immediate effect, as the Postal Dept., closes the gap with its rising cost of delivery. A midnight gazzet notification Thursday, hiked up portage for a 30 gram letter by fifty cents, to add Rs. 300 million to the Department’s revenues.

“With the Sri Lanka Transport Board and (SLTB) Ceylon Railway Department (CRD) raising tariffs and fuel prices going up, the cost of delivering mail has gone up as well,” says Post Master General, K A Senadeera.

The latest increase, the first in over two years still falls short of the Rs. 7.50 delivery cost now incurred by the Department due to rising fuel costs.

Senadeera says the hike will however, help bridge the gap in the Department’s income and expenditure, which stood at Rs. 585 million by end 2003.
