"The truck was hit by a Claymore mine," a police official in the district of Anuradhapura said by telephone.

"We can confirm that two soldiers were killed and another three were rushed to hospital with serious injuries," said the official, adding that the truck was transporting food for troops on the frontline with Tamil Tiger rebels.

The report came the morning after the Sri Lankan government announced it was formally ending a Norwegian-arranged ceasefire with the Tamil Tigers, and after a roadside bombing in the capital killed five and wounded 28.
