Jeremy Wariner v LaShawn Merritt: The 100 metres might be the ‘blue riband’ event but the 400m is a purists dream and the battle between Wariner, the reigning Olympic champion, and his American compatriot promises to be a real classic.

Merritt has been the first runner for a long time to challenge Wariner’s superiority beating him twice though the 24-year-old has hit back of late to give himself a slight edge.
