November 27, 2019 (LBO) – The Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament Karu Jayasuriya will recognise the Leader of the UNFGG, Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Leader of the Opposition.

The Speaker tweeted that the recognition of Wickremesinghe was “done upholding established Parliamentary traditions that should not be violated.”

The Speaker is one of Sri Lanka’s most respected political figures. He will likely remain Speaker until the dissolution of Parliament as the current government has been formed with support from only a minority of the legislature.

After the 2015 Presidential election in Sri Lanka, a minority government was formed until the dissolution of Parliament almost 8 months later. During that 8 month period, the then Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa continued to occupy the chair until Parliament was dissolved.
