Sri Lanka minister rejects cricket manager

July 21, 2008 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's sports minister has rejected a nomination to appoint former test cricketer Hashan Tillekeratne as manager of the national cricket team for an upcoming Indian tour. Sports minister Gamini Lokuge told our sister website Vimasuma.com Monday that he received the nominations of the Sri Lanka contingent for the Indian tour, and he has approved all appointments other than that of Tillekeratne.

He said Tillekeratne is an organizer for a political party and appointing him as a manager in a cricket team set a bad precedent.

Lokuge, who was elected to parliament as a UNP member, later crossed over to the ruling coalition along with a group of 17 others.

Lokuge said he had protested to Sri Lanka Cricket chairman Arjuna Ranatunga about forwarding Tillekeratne's name for team manager.

Ranatunga is a sitting lawmaker representing the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
