Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga Tuesday appealed for unity to rebuild her ethnically divided nation devastated by the tsunami which killed thousands. In her first address to the nation since the tragedy struck Sunday, the president said the natural disaster had caused havoc across the country and no ethnic community could face the challenge of rebuilding alone.

“I truly believe that this is the time for us to shed all our differences and unite to meet the challenge of rebuilding our country,” Kumaratunga said in a televised address to the nation. (AFP)
