Sri Lanka Tamil Tigers contest provincial council election

April 04, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers have entered the contest in provincial council elections in the east with a last-minute filing of nomination papers through a proxy party, media reports said. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) political wing, the People’s Front of Liberation Tigers (PFLT) submitted nominations for the polls just before nominations closed Thursday.

"The race for the Eastern Provincial Council took a dramatic turn yesterday, the last day for nominations, with a group representing the now defunct LTTE political wing, the People’s Front of Liberation Tigers submitting nominations for the May 10 polls at noon," The Island newspaper said in its lead story.

The Tiger political party had been registered with the Commissioner of Elections in 1998.

The newspaper quoted Elections Department officials as saying the nominations lists of the PFLT were accepted as they were attested by a Justice of Peace and the department was obliged to accept them.

The list of PFLT candidates carried the signature of Dilip Yogaratnam, alias Yogi, described as the General Secretary of the party, it said.
