Sri Lankan Airlines expands cargo network

Mar 24, 2011 (LBO) – Sri Lankan Airlines is expanding its cargo network with the opening of its first agent’s office in Galle in the island’s southern province where economic activity is growing. A statement by the national carrier said its SriLankan Cargo unit aims to increase revenue for the airline.

SriLankan Airlines Cargo Sales Manager Mahiman Yapa said that SriLankan Cargo will expand its offices around the island in the near future.

The airline’s first authorised cargo agent’s office was opened in Jaffna. The agent in Galle is Trico Maritime.

Economic activity is increasing in the southern province with a new industrial zone coming up next to a newly built port in Hambantota and an international airport also planned in the same area.

Yapa also said residents in the region could use the airline’s “Bag it” concept by handing over shipments of personal effects, gift items and small parcels to the Galle Office for transportation to Colombo by Trico.

This would minimise the inconvenience of travelling up to the capital Colombo or the international airport at Katunayake, further north, for these shipments.
