Sri Lanka’s Mendis ruled out of Bangladesh Tests

December 11, 2008 (AFP) – Sri Lanka’s spin sensation Ajantha Mendis will miss the upcoming two-Test series in Bangladesh due to an ankle injury, the country’s cricket board said on Thursday. Mendis will be replaced by left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for the Test series starting on December 26, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said.

He suffered the injury last weekend while bowling for his local club and will need at least three to four weeks to recover, it said.

Mendis, however, has not been ruled out of a tri-nation one-day tournament beginning in Dhaka on January 10. Zimbabwe are the third team.

He played a key role in his team’s 2-1 victory over India in his debut three-Test series at home in August, taking 26 wickets with clever variations.

The 23-year-old army officer is also poised to become the fastest to reach 50 one-day wickets, having already grabbed 48 in 18 matches.

India’s Ajit Agarkar holds the record, achieving the feat in 23 one-day internationals.
