During its two month trial period, the cellular operator will give free outgoing and incoming calls to customers who sign up on its new GSM network. rn

rnOfficials expect the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) to make up its mind by January 2004. rn

rnKey areas requiring approval include incoming and outgoing tariffs and monthly rentals.rn

rnMobitel officials say they will use the promotional period to test their virgin GSM network and its capacity to handle heavy traffic.rn

rnAlready, over 1000 users are active on the GSM network, with Mobitels CEO Lalith de Silva saying that over 80,000 customers have made a commitment to use the service. rn

rnEstimates are that by end 2003, the network will carry over 100,000 subscribers, all signed up along the two month promotional period. rn
