The main opposition United National Party, is trying to shake off 'its sleepy giant image', with a countrywide street protest against the rising cost of living. The move comes just days after the Marxist JVP, threw a challenge at the UNP, to show its strength by galvanising public support.
"We are now beginning a major agitation program in the capital city on Friday the 24th of this month against the unbearable cost of living," said an earnest looking UNP spokesman Prof. G L Peiris told a news conference on Thursday.
The UNP hopes to extend this 'agitation' to other parts of the country eventually.
Peiris urged the government to 'do its bit', to bring down the "unbearable" cost of living.
A seemingly complacent UNP also voiced its concern as to how the Government could present a clear-cut economic policy, with so many contradictions within itself.
