July 12, 2006 (AFP) – Two policemen were killed Wednesday in a landmine attack by suspected Tamil Tiger guerrillas in Sri Lanka’s northern Jaffna peninsula, defence officials here said. The constables were travelling in a pick-up truck when it hit a Claymore mine at Nallur in the Jaffna peninsula, the officials said.
The attack came a day after the military said it had sunk a suspected Tamil Tiger boat in the area.
The rebels and the government signed a ceasefire in 2002 but it has been breached by almost daily tit-for-tat attacks in the past six months. At least 830 people have died in the violence since December, according to official figures.
