Jan 13 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s supplies of oil, wheat and cement from the Northern town of Trincomalee has been disrupted since Thursday, following a protest campaign, police said Friday.
Jan 13 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s supplies of oil, wheat and cement from the Northern town of Trincomalee has been disrupted since Thursday, following a protest campaign, police said Friday. Presently, Indian Oil’s local unit Lanka IOC, Singapore’s Prima and Tokyo Cement use their Trincomalee base to supply oil, wheat and cement respectively.
Prima’s Trincomalee wheat mill currently supplies all the island’s flour requirements.
The four-day protest campaign or hartal as it is commonly known, came into effect from 12 and runs on till 14 of this month.
“An organisation called the Sinhala East Sanvidanaya has distributed leaflets in the Trincomalee town of Kantalai, to protest the atrocities of the LTTE (Liberation of Tamil Tiger Rebels), Kantalai Police said.
The hartal has successfully closed down all government offices, shops and transport from Habarana to Trincomalee.
Police said they suspected that the JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna) was also involved in this work stoppage.
