A campaign to re-route Galle Road traffic has hit a red light, with the Colombo Traffic Police Div., looking for more time to shape up its plans. The Colombo Traffic Police Division postponed plans for unidirectional traffic on the Galle Road and R A de Mel Mawatha until further notice.

The Traffic Police last week announced plans to use Galle Road for entry traffic and R A de Mel Mawatha for exit traffic between the stretch of Bambalapitiya and Colpetty.

“The project was to start this Tuesday, but we decided to postpone it until further notice,” said Sub Inspector of Police, Police Emergency, Ranjith Usgoda-arachchi.

The Traffic Police attributes its decision to the large-scale coordination that is required, including demarcating bus stands in R A de Mel Mawatha that is not currently a bus route.

The plan was to streamline vehicles entering and leaving Colombo city and to reduce traffic jams by using the Galle Road for entry traffic and R A de Mel Mawatha for exit traffic.
