Ceylon Electricity Board unions (CEB) will go on a half day token strike tomorrow, protesting against a Cabinet paper to restructure the loss making utility.
The Government is to take up the controversial Cabinet paper for discussion on Wednesday, sparking the protest by the CEB’s 52 trade unions.
“We will go on a half day token strike tomorrow afternoon. It looks like the government will go ahead with the Cabinet paper despite the assurance that it would be discussed with unions before it is taken up,” President of the CEB Engineers Union, Ananda Piyatilake said.
“We are demanding that the Cabinet paper be withdrawn and a new one be drawn up on a new model.
We do not plan a supply disruption,” Piyatilake said.
A trade union protest in early April shelved the Cabinet paper until now.
Unions are opposed to plans to dismantle the state utility into independent units of generation transmission, and distribution, and have threatened an all out supply disruption if it goes ahead.
