President says coal power and upper Kotmale hydro power project are top priority in infrastructure development. Delivering the budget speech, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said “the coal power plant and Upper Kotmale hydro power project will be given highest priority in order to provide low cost electricity to the people as early as possible.”
“The electricity will be provided at half rate to the people living in the districts where new coal power plants are installed,” he said.
“Religious places in those districts will be given electricity free of charge,” he said.
Meanwhile other long overdue road, railway, ports and airport development programmes are to begin immediately.
These include the southern expressway, the Kandy-Colombo highway, the outer circular road, the Katunayake-Colombo rail link, a second airport runway, a second international airport at Weeravila and the Colombo South Harbour.
