The fire was brought under control after about an hour, but an official with the Ceylon Electricity Board said it was too early to assess the damage.

The single generator caught fire, possibly due to a technical fault, the official said, though it was not clear for how long the plant may have to be shut down.

The 80 MW Kukule power station is a ‘Run-of-the River’ type of plant, meaning that water used to generate electricity cannot be stored if the plant is shut down.
