Greece Prime Minister quits and calls general elections
Aug 21, 2015 (LBO) – Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has resigned last night putting the country in danger of political instability.
General elections are expected to be held on 20 September 2015, as per media reports.
“The public mandate we got on January 25 exhausted its limits and now the sovereign people must yet again have its say,” Tsipras said in a televised address to the nation.
“I want to be honest with you. We did not achieve the agreement we expected before the January elections,” he said.
“Your vote will decide on whether we represented the country with the required decisiveness and courage during the tough negotiations with our creditors.
”
However the Greek constitution says when a government resigns, the president should ask the second biggest party to try to form a new administration.
Current second-biggest party, the New Democracy, has said that they would try to form a coalition government.
If that fails, a caretaker government will be appointed to lead the country until the new elections.
Result of belated tackling of financial issues of the country for decades.
