Sri Lanka is hoping to raise US$ 33.1 mn in initial aid, to rebuild the islands tsunami ravaged essential infrastructure, at a United Nations (UN) ‘flash appeal’ in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday. “UN staff in tsunami-hit areas, including UNDP officials and UN volunteers, are identifying country recovery priorities for a flash appeal that Secretary-General Kofi Annan and UNDP Administrator Mark Malloch Brown will present to donors at a conference in Jakarta tomorrow (Thursday),” the UN announced on Wednesday.

“Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Seychelles are participating in the appeal, which amounts to nearly US0 mn,” said the announcement.

The UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) is asking for US$33.1 mn in the flash appeal to help Sri Lanka, where the tsunami claimed 30,000 lives, and 700,000 need immediate assistance.
