PUCSL Announces 15-pct Overall Electricity Tariff Increase Effective Tonight

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced today a 15% increase in electricity tariffs, effective from June 12, 2025. This decision follows a comprehensive review of utility bills and public feedback submitted by the Ceylon Electricity Board for the June to September 2025 period.

Despite this immediate increase, the PUCSL emphasizes that the overall impact on the 2025 tariff structure represents an 8% reduction compared to 2024. This is due to a significant 20% tariff reduction implemented earlier this year, on January 18, 2025. Therefore, even with the new hike, the electricity tariff remains lower than the rates in effect before January 18, 2025, PUCSL said.

The Commission, operating under Section 30 of the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 20 of 2009, made this decision after carefully considering the cost-based electricity tariff system (price formula) and balancing both public interest and utility needs. The PUCSL stated that the 15% increase will apply for the period up to the end of 2025.
